Full Product Description

Originally a descriptive term for someone with fair hair, a fair complexion or who wore white clothing, ‘White’, in the now redundant form of ‘Quhyt’, is recorded in Ayrshire in the early fourteenth century during the reign of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce.
In the Gaelic form of ‘MacGhillebhain, its bearers had a kinship with both Clan Lamont and Clan MacGregor – sharing in both their glorious fortunes and tragic misfortunes – while in later centuries many have gained high honours and distinction through a wide range of endeavours.
They include the NASA astronaut Ed White, who in 1965 became the first American to conduct a space-walk, Margaret Bourke-White, Life magazine’s first female photographer and who in 1929 became the first Western photographer allowed into the Soviet Union, and the multi-award winning American singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer Barry White.
From earliest times to the present day, the lives and times of the Whites are chronicled here.
